Other Military Research

These are all the other branches of the military research tree. These branch off from the essential research parts of the military research tree.

Fortification

Level 1 Allows access to wooden walls/gatehouses
Level 2 Allows access to wooden platforms
Level 3 Allows access to stone walls
Level 4 Allows access to lookout tower
Level 5 Allows access to small tower
Level 6 Allows access to gatehouse
Level 7 Allows access to large tower
Level 8 Allows access to great tower

Fortification allows you to lace the structures that will act as your main line of defence in your castle. What you really need from this research is the last level which allows access to great towers which will make up most of your castle structure. The first few levels aren’t that important. They unlock wooden structures but you really don’t want to be placing these in your castle.

Vaults

Level 1 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 20%
Level 2 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 40%
Level 3 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 60%
Level 4 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 80%
Level 5 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 100%
Level 6 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 120%
Level 7 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 140%
Level 8 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 160%
Level 9 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 180%
Level 10 Increase time it takes to pillage your village: 200%

Your castles getting pillages can be a big problem early in the game especially from Ai opponents. This research extends the time it takes to pillage your village and once you have a well-built castle and this researched up a few levels, Ai opponents won’t be able to pillage you anymore. For human players attacking you, you should try to have this maxed in order to stop them pillaging you. If they send a large force of catapults that knock down part of your walls you will need this full in order to delay their pillaging long enough to kill their troops.

Defences

Level 1 Boost to armour 5%. Access to Guard Houses
Level 2 Boost to armour 10%. Access to Killing Pits
Level 3 Boost to armour 15%.
Level 4 Boost to armour 20%. Upgrade houses to wood
Level 5 Boost to armour 25%. Access to smelters/pots
Level 6 Boost to armour 30%.
Level 7 Boost to armour 35%. Access to moats
Level 8 Boost to armour 40%. Upgrade houses to stone
Level 9 Boost to armour 45%.
Level 10 Boost to armour 50%. Upgrade houses with iron

Defences are an extremely important research, quite possibly the most important of the castle related researches. First it allows you access to guard houses. At the start of the game you can only place 20 troops in your castle which is a pitiful amount, building guard houses allows you to place 10 more troops for every guard house up to a maximum of 400. Another hugely important part of this research is the fact that it boosts the protection of archers on your walls. What this means are once you have this full and you have archers on top of towers they are extremely hard to kill by enemy troops on the ground.

Diplomacy

Level 1 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 5%
Level 2 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 10%
Level 3 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 15%
Level 4 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 20%
Level 5 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 25%
Level 6 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 30%
Level 7 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 35%
Level 8 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 40%
Level 9 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 45%
Level 10 Increase chance of stopping AI attacks: 50%

If you want an easy time for yourself throughout the game, research diplomacy full near the very start of the game. What this research does is it gives you a chance of escaping an enemy attack whether it’s from an AI castle or an enemy siege camp. If you don’t know this already, if you escape the attack you still get the full honour for the attack meaning you can avoid siege camp waves and such and still get the honour for them. Another handy thing is that you can escape ransack and pillage waves from castles and save yourself losing buildings and resources.

Construction

Level 1 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 10%
Level 2 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 15%
Level 3 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 20%
Level 4 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 25%
Level 5 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 30%
Level 6 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 35%
Level 7 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 40%
Level 8 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 45%
Level 9 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 50%
Level 10 Decrease build time of castle buildings: 60%

When you start to build your castle make sure you have this research full. The reason being a great tower takes 24 hours to build without this research full; whereas when you have it full it takes just over 9 hours. This bonus applies to all castle structures such as moats, guard houses etc. so as you can see instead of a castle taking a couple of months to build you can have it built in a few weeks with this full.

Sally Forth

Level 1 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 1
Level 2 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 2
Level 3 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 3
Level 4 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 4
Level 5 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 5
Level 6 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 6
Level 7 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 7
Level 8 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 8
Level 9 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 9
Level 10 Knighs emerge fron your keep during battle: 10

A sally forth is another line of defence for your castle. It allows a number of knights to emerge from your castle during battle. Every level you go up allows one more knight to emerge during a battle. Knights are devastating to enemy catapults if they get near killing dozens of then in seconds.

Conscription

Level 1 Gives access to armed peasants
Level 2 Increase armed peasant hit points: 10%
Level 3 Increase armed peasant hit points: 20%
Level 4 Increase armed peasant hit points: 30%
Level 5 Increase armed peasant hit points: 40%
Level 6 Increase armed peasant hit points: 50%
Level 7 Increase armed peasant hit points: 60%
Level 8 Increase armed peasant hit points: 70%
Level 9 Increase armed peasant hit points: 80%
Level 10 Increase armed peasant hit points: 100%

In my opinion this is a research you can avoid altogether. Armed peasants are quite useless and there are much better researches you should be doing and not wasting time and points on this research.

Long Bow

Level 1 Gives access to archers
Level 2 Increase archer hit points: 10%
Level 3 Increase archer hit points: 20%
Level 4 Increase archer hit points: 30%
Level 5 Increase archer hit points: 40%
Level 6 Increase archer hit points: 50%
Level 7 Increase archer hit points: 60%
Level 8 Increase archer hit points: 70%
Level 9 Increase archer hit points: 80%
Level 10 Increase archer hit points: 100%

When you start to research up troops this is the very first research you should do. Archers are the most important unit in the game both in attack and defence. When full, archers have a fair amount of health but when this is very low archers die extremely quickly. Research this up early in the game to allow you to attack AI opponents with very low losses.

Pike

Level 1 Gives access to pikemen
Level 2 Increase pikemen hit points: 10%
Level 3 Increase pikemen hit points: 20%
Level 4 Increase pikemen hit points: 30%
Level 5 Increase pikemen hit points: 40%
Level 6 Increase pikemen hit points: 50%
Level 7 Increase pikemen hit points: 60%
Level 8 Increase pikemen hit points: 70%
Level 9 Increase pikemen hit points: 80%
Level 10 Increase pikemen hit points: 100%

After archers pikemen are probably the most important unit. When researches full pikemen have very high health meaning they can take a massive amount of damage before they die which allows them to take down walls, spring killing pits and enter enemy keeps.

Sword

Level 1 Gives access to swordsmen
Level 2 Increase swordsmen hit points: 10%
Level 3 Increase swordsmen hit points: 20%
Level 4 Increase swordsmen hit points: 30%
Level 5 Increase swordsmen hit points: 40%
Level 6 Increase swordsmen hit points: 50%
Level 7 Increase swordsmen hit points: 60%
Level 8 Increase swordsmen hit points: 70%
Level 9 Increase swordsmen hit points: 80%
Level 10 Increase swordsmen hit points: 100%

Swordsmen can be handy in certain situations to take down enemy walls, however in a trade of against pikemen they just are not as good an option. However in defence you can use them to plug a hole in your castle and provide a good line of defence.

Catapult

Level 1 Gives access to catapults. Increase firing rate: 5%
Level 2 Increase firing rate: 10%
Level 3 Increase firing rate: 15%
Level 4 Increase firing rate: 20%
Level 5 Increase firing rate: 25%
Level 6 Increase firing rate: 30%
Level 7 Increase firing rate: 35%
Level 8 Increase firing rate: 40%
Level 9 Increase firing rate: 45%
Level 10 Increase firing rate: 50%

Catapults are the only thing capable of taking down towers in castles therefore in order to successfully attack player’s castles you need this researched up. Its best to max this before any large scale attacks as you will see that towers fall so much quicker when this is full.

Foraging

Level 1 Increase scout foraging capacity: 50%
Level 2 Increase scout foraging capacity: 100%
Level 3 Increase scout foraging capacity: 150%
Level 4 Increase scout foraging capacity: 200%
Level 5 Increase scout foraging capacity: 250%
Level 6 Increase scout foraging capacity: 300%
Level 7 Increase scout foraging capacity: 350%
Level 8 Increase scout foraging capacity: 400%
Level 9 Increase scout foraging capacity: 450%
Level 10 Increase scout foraging capacity: 500%

Foraging provides you with a steady stream of resource from the map. However at the start of stronghold kingdoms you will see that scouts carry very little. When you have this full each scout carries a lot more meaning you have more to sell, banquet with or many other useful things.

Horsemanship

Level 1 Increase scout speed: 25%
Level 2 Increase scout speed: 50%
Level 3 Increase scout speed: 75%
Level 4 Increase scout speed: 100%
Level 5 Increase scout speed: 125%
Level 6 Increase scout speed: 150%
Level 7 Increase scout speed: 175%
Level 8 Increase scout speed: 200%
Level 9 Increase scout speed: 225%
Level 10 Increase scout speed: 250%

Horsemanship is the research that allows you to reach resource stashes before other players. When full, horsemanship makes your scouts much faster allowing you to gain honour and resources quicker and rank up faster in the process.

Ransacking

Level 1 Max buildings to ransack: 1
Level 2 Max buildings to ransack: 2
Level 3 Max buildings to ransack: 3
Level 4 Max buildings to ransack: 4
Level 5 Max buildings to ransack: 5
Level 6 Max buildings to ransack: 6
Level 7 Max buildings to ransack: 7
Level 8 Max buildings to ransack: 8

Ransacking allows you to destroy buildings in enemy villages through successful attacks. While not strictly necessary near the start of the game, later on you can research this up and attack players and cause their village’s big setbacks by destroying a lot of their buildings.

Captains

Level 1 Maximum captains per village: 1
Level 2 Maximum captains per village: 2
Level 3 Maximum captains per village: 3
Level 4 Maximum captains per village: 4
Level 5 Maximum captains per village: 5

Captains fill a specialised role allowing you to buy or conquer villages. When this is full you can have 5 captains per village. 5 captains in your castle inside the keep provide a huge line of defence as captains rare quite had to kill.

Tactics

Level 1 Captains tactic: Rallying cry
Level 2 Captains tactic: Arrow volley
Level 3 Captains tactic: Battle cry
Level 4 Captains tactic: Catapults volley

Captains tactics are not hugely important to research, just because of the fact they are quite hard to use in terms of getting the timing right.

Logistics

Level 1 Increase captain speed: 25%
Level 2 Increase captain speed: 50%
Level 3 Increase captain speed: 75%
Level 4 Increase captain speed: 100%
Level 5 Increase captain speed: 125%
Level 6 Increase captain speed: 200%
Level 7 Increase captain speed: 350%
Level 8 Increase captain speed: 500%

When you send captains to get new villages they travel very slowly. If you are trying to get a village very far away it can take hours or days for them to reach their target. Researching this full increases their speed by a very large amount.
