Defensive Buildings

Guard Houses

Max per castle 40
Parish building required None
Tile size 3 x 3

Guard houses are probably the most important structure you need to place in your castle at the beginning. Each guard house placed allows an extra 10 troops to be placed in the castle. you should build all of these at the beginning when you have enough resources.

Defend Guard Houses

Beware guard houses can be destroyed very easily so make sure to have them deep inside or castle and very well protected. Catapults only need to fire on guard houses for a couple of seconds to destroy them. Troops also can demolish guard houses very quickly.

Killing Pits

Max per castle As may as you can fit
Parish building required None
Tile size 1 x 1

Killing pits are invisible to the enemy if they get a successful scout report of your city and only become visible to them during a battle when they spring open. Pits cause damage to any troops that walk over them when they open. Peasants can be used to clear out some traps before your more expensive troops walk over them. Pits can be placed beside towers to defend them or used to line pathways inside the castle.

Moats

Max per castle As many as you can fit
Parish building required None
Tile size 1 x 1

Moats provide a very strong barrier against troops trying to attack your castle. Moats must be dug up by troops and can take some time to dig up. Moats can be placed around towers instead of using stone walls as moats cannot be destroyed by catapults and take longer to destroy than walls. Moats can be fired over though so it’s a good idea to have a mix of both moats and stone walls.

Smelters

Max per castle As many as you can fit
Parish building required None
Tile size 4 x 4

Oil pots require a smelter to be placed first before the pots themselves can be placed. Each smelter allows 5 oils pots to be placed and having as much of your wall sections lined with pots as possible provides a very strong defence against enemy infantry. Pots can be placed instantly, and once they drop their oil on the ground the surrounding area goes on fire burning any troops in the area for a short period of time. Low defence troops like peasants and swordsmen die almost instantly while causing major damage to pikemen.

Oil Pots

Max per castle 5 oil pots per smelter
Parish building required None
Tile size 1 x 1

Smelters allow oil pots to be placed in your castle. Each smelter allows 5 oil pots to be placed and it’s a good idea to have a large enough compliment of smelters in your city. The defence value of smelters is extremely low and they can be destroyed very easily so keep them deep within your castle.
